Unlimited Cities developed by UFO is the first available tool for collaborative urbanism that is used by the community. The beta version was presented in June 2011 at the “Futurs en Seine” festival in Paris. Unlimited Cities is particularly easy to use and affordable for all types of cities.
Since January 2012, approximately 30 cities have been interested and 3 contracts are in the process of being established in Rio, Montpellier and Evry.

Unlimited Cities adapts to different contexts and projects:
- Public areas in the largest favela in South America in Rio
- Rebuilding of cities and villages in the North of Japan
- Ecodistricts with Urbadiversité in Montpellier
- Art Biennale in Brussels…

7 months have passed since the presentation of the prototype in Paris. Through numerous encounters and travels, everyday our motto makes more and more sense.

« Unlimited Cities » is a project that was recently presented at the "Futur en Seine" festival. The festival is particularly interesting to us as it addresses the general public. The intent of « Unlimited Cities » is to share the conception of a city.

« Unlimited Cities » is an application that is available to all and very easy to use. It can be used on Smartphones or tablets.

The first step in using the « Unlimited Cites » application: it is open for all and simple to use. You have an image. Through interactions with this image of the street on which you are situated, you can change it according to your vision.

The special feature of this application is that we do not intend to show projects that have already been considered by architects or a city. Rather, we show a photograph of an existent space, of the street as it is, and by means of an extremely intuitive interface, we give you the possibility to add trees, to lower or increase the height of buildings, perhaps add cafes or even bike lanes. It is a vision that is your own, a vision that is not imposed, a vision that is entirely free.

Step two, once you submit your own vision of the street, the application allows you to see on the spot the choices made by other people. The access to other people’s vision of the same street allows for transparency. This aspect is very important as it builds trust. This knowledge is by no means only for professionals; we intend to share it in real time with those who produce these visions—the city, you and me. Indeed, I am not only an architect and urbanist, but I am also of course a member of the city’s community.

One way to present « Unlimited Cities » is to say that it can be used with very few means: a connected interface, which is quite standard these days. A city, you need to be in a street or a square, surrounded by the city’s noise and buzz with people all around. This is part of the game. And an individual’s Brain. This “brain” will not be asked to do very much. We’ll only ask for its sensations. While the city is an extremely complex reality, it may be approached with very simple elements. Do I want more nature? Do I need a place to park my car? Do I want to consider other forms of transportation?

The city is a permanent construction. The application’s intention is not to find a preferred image of the city but simply to allow its inhabitants to express their own opinion of the city. Above all, it allows them to see the city as malleable and transformable, and as a space that belongs to them.

UFO has developed the concept of collaborative urbanism, making cities more liveable, more attractive and more sustainable. To avoid adding cognitive waste to environmental waste, UFO is convinced that we need to design tools that forge a collaborative intelligence. UFO is a +start-up that originated in architecture. It develops its tools thanks to the support of public research centres and aid from the Paris Region and European community. UFO also started the Collaborative Urbanism community, comprised of designers and developers. Collaborative Urbanism is an active community developing in viral fashion. The decentralised network is operated today by co-developers living in Paris, Sao Paulo, Tokyo, Santa Barbara, +Strasbourg and Grenoble (not counting those who are not settled such as Nathanael Dorent: New York + Los Angeles + San Francisco + Paris).
